Press ReleaseHundreds of elementary, middle and high school students and teachers from around the North Central Florida region will try their hand at engineering design competitions, building and racing mousetrap-powered cars and launching water-propelled rockets at the 2007 Regional SECME Olympiad, hosted by the College of Engineering at the University of Florida. The event is designed to pique students' interests in science, engineering, math and technology and is open to the public. Winners at this competition will move on to compete at the national level. The day's events begin on April 21, 2007 at 7:30 a.m. and conclude with closing ceremonies at 5 p.m. Events will be held in locations around campus including the Florida Gym, and Weil Hall. SECME is a national alliance of engineering universities, K-12 educators and corporate investors encouraging students to study science, engineering, math and technology in college. SECME was originally an acronym for Southeastern Consortium for Minorities in Engineering, and its mission was to increase the number of historically under-represented racial minorities and women in scientific fields. Today it is known simply as SECME, and its goal is to create a diverse and globally competitive workforce. Training SessionsAll volunteers are welcome. Electees who cannot make it on SECME day can use this to partially fulfill their SECME requirement. Teach kids how to build mousetrap cars and bottle rockets for their SECME event entries. When schools contact us requesting help, you may choose to go if it fits your schedule. Schedule
